Our class played the Minecraft Clue map awhile ago. It was a good map, but the class had some things that they would change. Most people thought it was fun but, they thought that the codes you had too find were hidden a little too well. Almost everyone in the class thought that it was a good map for teamwork and problem-solving. Some people thought that it would be a good map to use with math. Like making the passcodes different math problems you would have to solve for. Overall, it was a good map but it could use some tweaks here and there.

Our class played the Minecraft Washington DC map, and the reviews were similar throughout the class. The class did enjoy the map, and it was amazingly built. And yes, there was some educational components to it, most of the class agreed that there wasn't much to do. It was great to explore, especially if you haven't been to D.C., but there could have been little activities to do along with that map. Overall, the map was great, but not the most fun thing to do.
~R.L For the past couple weeks me and my classmates have been working on our creative builds. Reading some of the student responses, I noticed that most people have stuck to their original plan of structure. One issue that I think is EXTREMELY easy to fix, is the build tools issue. With great power comes great responsibility. I think everybody needs to be mature, and move past childish trolling. Other than that, we've been doing pretty great on our worlds. I also think that this class should move to be a regular 90 minute class, Because it is much harder to builds things in a short amount of time.
Today we are still working in our 8ish on the educational build but our teacher did not save the world so half of the stuff was destroyed. But it all right because now we can come up with bigger better ideas for our build.
Today, we split up into 8ish groups and we could build anything in our areas, but it had to be somewhat educational. So the question was created: "What makes a lesson a good one?" Almost everyone said it should be educational, but also have some element of fun in it. Some people said that they were going to make a quest in which you had to complete. Their quests would have different subjects of school that you could learn about. Other people said they would have things where you could make math problems for other people to complete.
What kind of world should a turtle-building mission world be? Should it be flat or random? Should we have border blocks to designate building areas for students and prevent you from going to each other's areas? Should students be able to build and dig - or just turtles? Would you like to solve any puzzles or just have creative freedom with the turtles? We just finished a mission called turtle canyon and Mrs. Dupriest asked us what kind of world we wanted to do next. She asked us if we wanted a flat terrain or a randomized one. The majority of the class said they wanted a randomized terrain because it would be more challenging and they did not want a flat world because there would be no need for digging and it would be too easy. Most people also wanted the turtles to be the only ones able to build and dig. They wanted to use what we just learned about turtles and if people could build and dig to, there would be no need for turtles. Almost the whole class wanted border blocks due to previous experience. We have had other people destroy and steal things from other people and no one liked that. We don't trust each other enough to work with the whole class again, so the majority of the class wanted to work alone. The final question was if we wanted to have creative freedom or if we wanted a mission or puzzles. The results were half and half. People wanted to be able to show what they know and build what ever they wanted to express their creative thinking. The other half of the class wanted a problem to solve or a mission to have a challenge.
In class on the 2nd we did our first real day and on the sixth we reported how we felt and why. The average score was around a 4. Everyone who could join/be there liked it and learned how the turtles worked. Some people liked how they learned a lot and the turtles themselves. The main complaint was that the turtles were confusing.
On September 23, we were deciding how we should organize the tour for Mrs. Benton's class to see our creations on Minecraft. Some people disagreed about how we would present and gave pros and cons on why they thought their way was more efficient. Some people wanted to control the computer, and show the students their creations themselves, and others wanted to let the students show themselves around and sort of figure out the purpose of what people had made. On one hand, the people that said we (the creators) should control the computers ourselves, said that the students might accidentally brake their creations (on accident or on purpose) and no one else would be able to see the creation if they didn't know how to move properly. They also said that any questions the other class had could be answered easily if they had a tour guide. On the other hand, the people that said that the students should control the game themselves said that it could be a possibility for our teacher to make it so you could only move around and view the creations, and not build/destroy what we worked to make. They also said it would show if it would be easy or hard for someone to figure out how to use what they made without knowing much about the game. Either way, the both are good options to use to present things in Minecraft despite that they show different things to the creators and the students.

In minecraft on our adventure world these "turtles" look similar to a old monitor or computer and, we are learning how to code them and use their controls by just opening their interface. The turtles can be used to dig or go through a course in our case. They may build a bridge or a stair case all meant to make a players job easier. In other cases the turtle may build, fight dig or even farm and others can go around and give selected turtles commands or empty and fill their inventory.
Turtles can be used for all types of things you just have to know what your goal is and experiment. Today we started a new stage called Turtle Island. In this world, you can program little turtles to do the work for you such as building and destroying objects in Minecraft. Now most people today either had a vague understanding of programming or none at all. People also said some of the pros and cons of programming in Minecraft such as:
PROS: - You can program while playing a fun game. - After learning this maybe being able to create things on other platforms - Learning to program in a game maybe will make it easier and more fun to learn CONS: - Programming can be confusing or tricky - Can programming in Minecraft relate to other things in life? Sadly today the technology was unreliable so the MOD that we downloaded didn't work so in the game we couldn't see the NPCs (non-playable characters). That would help us on Turtle Island. |
